Gavin Bryars - Jesus Blood never failed me yet (full, audio only, no visual)
Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a 1971 composition by Gavin Bryars. It is formed on a loop of an unknown homeless man singing a brief stanza. Rich harmonies, comprising string and brass, are gradually overlaid over the stanza. The piece was first recorded for use in a documentary which chronicles street life in and around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo, in London. When later listening to the recordings, Bryars noticed the clip was in tune with his piano and that it conveniently looped into 13 bars.[2] For the first LP recording, Bryars was limited to a duration of 25 minutes; with the invention of the cassette tape, Bryars was able to complete a 60-minute version of the piece; and later, with the advent of the CD, a 74-minute version. Bryars says: In 1971, when I lived in London, I was working with a friend, Alan Power, on a film about people living rough in the area around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo Station. In the course of being filmed, some people broke into drunken song - sometimes bits of opera, sometimes sentimental ballads - and one, who in fact did not drink, sang a religious song "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet". This was not ultimately used in the film and I was given all the unused sections of tape, including this one. When I played it at home, I found that his singing was in tune with my piano, and I improvised a simple accompaniment. I noticed, too, that the first section of the song - 13 bars in length - formed an effective loop which repeated in a slightly unpredictable way. I took the tape loop to Leicester, where I was working in the Fine Art Department, and copied the loop onto a continuous reel of tape, thinking about perhaps adding an orchestrated accompaniment to this. The door of the recording room opened on to one of the large painting studios and I left the tape copying, with the door open, while I went to have a cup of coffee. When I came back I found the normally lively room unnaturally subdued. People were moving about much more slowly than usual and a few were sitting alone, quietly weeping. I was puzzled until I realised that the tape was still playing and that they had been overcome by the old man's singing. This convinced me of the emotional power of the music and of the possibilities offered by adding a simple, though gradually evolving, orchestral accompaniment that respected the tramp's nobility and simple faith. Although he died before he could hear what I had done with his singing, the piece remains as an eloquent, but understated testimony to his spirit and optimism." This is only for listening "pleasure", those who like this song probably have it, I uploaded it because there was no full version of it on youtube yet, I didn't put any visuals, because the audio is the most important here.

Hate Crimes

According to FBI statistics on hate crimes, a Jewish person is four times more likely to be the target of a hate crime than a Muslim person is in the US. There were just over 150 hate crimes against Muslims last year. There were over 600 hate crimes targeting Jews.

You don't ever hear about this, because our country and our media are run by anti-Semites.

Donald trolls us again

Separation of church and state is a concept that owes at least as much of its genesis to Christian teaching as it does to the Enlightenment. When Christ tells people to "render unto Caesar," he is specifically acknowledging a secular authority distinct from religion, and doing so in a way that indicated his own submission to secular authority.
If similar passages are to be found in the Koran, I am unable to find them; the closest is a passage that says "there is no compulsion in religion" - and those over the centuries who have converted to Islam at sword point would probably argue that even this hasn't born out in practice. But I'm not Muslim, and I welcome correction from anyone with a better understanding of this than I have. For what it's worth, a brief and decidedly anecdotal survey of Internet posts that match the terms "separation of church and state islam" give no definitive answer, but those who dispute that separation is possible are more likely to quote scripture in support of their position.
Absent any clear articulation that reconciles the concept of separation between church and state with Islamic scripture and centuries of Muslim teaching and practice, it's fair to question whether adherents of Islam genuinely embrace the kind of sacred/secular distinction that is behind the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution. And given that those same Islamic scriptures, teachings and practices justify lying - even under oath - to advance the cause of Islam, the sad truth is that while Donald Trump may have the wrong answer, he's at least asking some of the right, although difficult, questions.
And, sadly, *no one* else is. So I propose a question: How should the US respond to a religion which teaches core values that are at odds with its basic constitutional principles, and whose leaders articulate doctrines that go so far as to justify deceit, and even violence, to undermine the US government and threaten its citizens? I'm not saying that religion is necesarily Islam, but I think we need to have a conversation about how we would handle one, if only  hypothetically.

Epiphany

For a moment,
I was ushered into the presence of the Lord
near the corner of Union Avenue and Third Street,
in front of the pizzeria,
just past the sign that explained that
one must feed the meters between 8 AM and 5 PM
on weekdays.

He mumbled a bit
or perhaps, I confused His thundering with mumbling.
I thought I heard Him say,
“Average effort, thou moderately faithful servant.
Hang around a bit, there might be a few
things for you to work on

before you enter into My rest.”

The Last Paper Towel on Earth

The tiles are cold, and
a breeze blows beneath the door
in the kitchen.

Dogs bark in the distance
demanding to be let out
or let in
or announcing strangers who pass by
or warning of coyotes wandering
near the trash cans.

Out in the dark garden
the last paper towel on earth
drifts by on the wind
soon to be brought down
by the looming rain.

Guidelines for meetings at work

Here are some guidelines I've developed for handling meetings in the workplace.

  • Never agree to attend a meeting that doesn't have a written agenda published before the meeting.
  • Leave the meeting as soon as more than 30 seconds are spent on anything that isn't on the agenda.
  • Never attend "status" meetings. Status meetings are basically your boss proclaiming that he/she is either too stupid to use email to get your status or too lazy to just ask you.
  • Assigning blame is not a valid reason for a meeting. Neither is taking credit.
  • If anyone in your organization is in meetings more than 10% of your time on average, they should be fired or reassigned.
  • Recognize that almost all meetings represent a communication failure within your organization, because if you were communicating right, you wouldn't need to have a meeting. The most important agenda item for any such meeting should be "how do we make sure we don't have to ever have a meeting like this again?"
  • People are social creatures. If you're having a meeting with a group of people who don't regularly meet, especially if it's a face-to-face meeting of people who are normally geographically disbursed, plan the schedule so that those who wish to socialize before or after the meeting can do so. That means don't do over lunch, and don't make it run so late that people are in a hurry to get home after.
  • If there's a meeting that begins between 11:30 and 1 PM local time, there had fucking better be lunch. Otherwise, you're an asshole.

Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Bruce Cockburn
The March 2015 issue of Acoustic Guitar will feature an excerpt from Bruce Cockburn’s new memoir, Rumours of Glory, in which the Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist talks about why, at 23, he left ’60s-era folk-rock to focus on solo acoustic music. He’d met fingerstyle guitarist Fox Watson, who taught Cockburn how to play in alternate tunings. “I was sort of disdainful of open tunings back then because I didn’t like most of what people did with them—playing the same four chord formations in different tunings, trying for a specious variety in their sound without going to the trouble of actually learning their instrument,” Cockburn writes. “But when Fox played in any of several tunings he used, what came out was fluid as a mountain creek and agile as a gull.” That was more than four decades ago. Since then, Cockburn has returned to playing electric guitar in rock bands, but he never left an acoustic guitar far behind, and he’s developed a style that is unmistakably his. In this special half-hour edition of Acoustic Guitar Sessions, senior editor Marc Greilsamer talks at length with Cockburn about his love of acoustic guitars and the singer-songwriter performs three tunes: the instrumental “Bohemian 3-Step,” “Waiting for a Miracle” and his most famous song, the politically fierce “If I Had a Rocket Launcher.” - See more at: http://ift.tt/1Qk6C5k

Spare us the smug conviction of your perceived superiority please.

A lot of people seem to think that the purpose of argument is to berate, belittle and embarrass people who disagree with you rather than to convince them of your position. Unfortunately, if I stopped interacting with everyone who does this, I would lose most of my conservative acquaintances.

And most of my progressive ones.

We must do something

If you're encouraged by the president's comments on the Oregon shooting, remember this: he thought we should do something about Syria too. The result is that we spent millions to train exactly 5 guys, and then a year later the Russians bombed them.

Things I Wish I Could Tweet #1

The fact that some fetuses don't become babies justifies abortion in the same way that the fact that some salmon don't make it upstream to spawn justifies poisoning rivers.

Death Cab For Cutie: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Death Cab For Cutie came as a trio: Ben Gibbard sang, Nick Harmer played bass, and we wheeled in our piano for Zac Rae. This intimate set included two new songs — including "Black Sun," the first single from their new album Kintsugi. The album title refers to the Japanese art of reassembling broken pottery and making the breakage part of the newly formed pot. Death Cab For Cutie, a groundbreaking band formed in 1997, has gone through its own rebuilding of sorts. Chris Walla, a founding member of the band, has left, after contributing music to Kintsugi, but that's his farewell offering. Death Cab For Cutie is still strongly defined by Gibbard's words, and that couldn't be more evident in this beautifully stark performance, which also includes "No Room In Frame" from Kintsugi, as well as two stripped-down favorites from the past. One, "Your Heart Is An Empty Room," is from Plans, while a beautiful love song from Transatlanticism, "Passenger Seat," moistened more than a few eyes in the crowd.
